A tote bag quote is rarely expensive because of the bag. It gets expensive because of everything that was not on the price tag.
So how much do custom tote bags cost? Most styles in our catalog list at about $1.50 to $10 per bag, and the real custom tote bag cost depends on fabric, quantity, imprint colors and freight. This guide breaks down custom tote bag pricing for businesses across the USA with real catalog numbers, shows where quantity breaks actually save money, works through a 250-bag example, and lists what to send so your quote is a delivered number, not a guess.
Quick answer
Non-woven polypropylene totes have a median catalog price of about $2 per bag, usually from 150 pieces.
Cotton and canvas totes sit at a median of about $6 per bag, usually from 50 pieces.
Recycled and RPET totes have a median of about $8 per bag, with a wide spread by style.
Add setup, typically $25 to $75 per color or imprint location, plus freight on the actual weight and ZIP code.
Quantity breaks matter far more on cotton and canvas than on non-woven. Price two or three tiers before you settle on a number.
Custom tote bag cost by material
We pulled 1,200 tote listings from our custom tote bags catalog on October 8, 2026 and sorted them by the fabric named in the product title. The prices below are per bag at each listing's first quantity break. Catalog prices change, so treat this as a map, not a quote.
Material | Middle half of prices | Median price | Median first quantity break |
|---|---|---|---|
Non-woven polypropylene | $1.49 to $3.00 | $2.14 | 150 |
Laminated non-woven | $1.97 to $3.10 | $2.57 | 150 |
Polyester | $3.10 to $4.42 | $3.50 | 150 |
Cotton | $2.76 to $9.80 | $5.76 | 50 |
Jute | $3.82 to $8.08 | $5.94 | 75 |
Cotton canvas | $3.03 to $10.20 | $6.26 | 50 |
Recycled or RPET | $3.72 to $15.44 | $7.91 | 50 |
Two things stand out. Cheap fabrics come with higher starting quantities, so a $2 bag can still mean a $300 order. And the cotton, canvas and recycled ranges are wide because those labels cover everything from a thin 5 oz grocery bag to a zippered 12 oz boat tote. The fabric weight tells you more than the word "canvas" does.
What actually drives custom tote bag pricing
Fabric weight and construction
Cotton and canvas are sold by weight in ounces per square yard. A 5 oz bag feels like packaging. An 8 to 12 oz bag feels like something people keep. Gussets, a zipper, an inside pocket and longer handles each add cost. Pay for the ones the bag will actually use.
Quantity
Setup costs the same whether you print 50 bags or 5,000, so it spreads thinner as quantity rises. How much the price drops depends on the bag:
A cotton tote in our catalog lists at $6.17 each at 100, $5.37 at 250, $4.67 at 500 and $4.06 at 1,000. That is about 34 percent less per bag between 100 and 1,000.
A non-woven shopping tote lists at $1.11 at 250 and $1.04 at 1,000. That is about 6 percent less per bag.
On a premium canvas or cotton bag, ask for the next tier up. Sometimes 500 bags cost only a little more in total than 400. On a basic non-woven bag, buy what you need.
Imprint colors, locations and method
Screen printing is the default for bold one or two color logos on cotton and canvas. Each extra color and each extra location usually means another screen and another setup. A full-color heat transfer handles photos and gradients but costs more per bag and does not hit an exact Pantone match. Embroidery works on heavier canvas and looks quiet and premium, at a higher price. Our guide to setup fees and screen charges explains every line you might see.
Small runs
Most promotional products have minimums between 24 and 250 units. Under the published minimum, some products can still run with a less-than-minimum fee, usually $35 to $75. If your logo only exists as a website JPG, a vector redraw is typically $30 to $75, quoted before any work starts, and you keep the file.
Freight
Totes are light but bulky. Freight is calculated from the actual weight, carton size and ship-to address, and every extra address adds its own shipment. A bag that looks cheap on the page can cost noticeably more once it is boxed and split across five offices.
A worked example: 250 cotton totes, one-color logo
Here is how the cotton tote above turns into a delivered number for a trade show order.
Line | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
250 bags at $5.37 | $1,342.50 | Catalog price at the 250 break |
Setup, one color, one location | About $25 to $75 | Range from our FAQ, confirmed on the quote |
Freight to one address | Quoted | Actual weight and ZIP code |
Before freight | About $1,368 to $1,418 | About $5.47 to $5.67 per bag |
Now change one thing at a time. Add a second color and you add another setup and often a run charge. Add a back imprint and you pay for a second location. Move up to 500 bags and the per-bag price falls to $4.67, so 500 bags cost about $2,335 plus setup, not double the 250 order. Split delivery across two offices and freight is quoted twice. Ask whether the listed price includes the first imprint color. The quote line will say.
Canvas tote bag cost vs non-woven: when the cheap bag is the expensive one
A non-woven bag at $2 is the right buy for a high-traffic aisle where people need a third hand for two hours. It is the wrong buy for a client gift or a retail program, where the handles peel and the bag ends up in a recycling bin with your logo on it.
Use cost per use, not cost per bag. A $6 canvas tote that becomes someone's grocery bag for a year shows your logo every week. A $2 bag used once shows it a handful of times. If the bag has to carry more than a few pounds or show up again next month, spend on fabric weight before you spend on extra imprint colors.

Bulk tote bag prices by use
Use | Typical bag | Catalog price to plan around |
|---|---|---|
Trade show or conference aisle | Non-woven or light cotton, open top | About $1.50 to $3 per bag |
Grocery, retail or community events | Gusseted cotton, laminated non-woven or jute | About $3 to $6 per bag |
Employee or client gift | 8 to 12 oz canvas, zipper or boat tote | About $6 to $15 per bag |
Sustainability program | Recycled cotton or RPET with documented content | About $4 to $15 per bag |
These bands are catalog prices before setup and freight, based on the listings above. If your program leans on recycled claims, read our eco-friendly promotional products guide before printing "recycled" on the bag. We can filter for documented recycled content at quoting.
When a tote is not the right bag
For runners, gyms and youth events, custom drawstring bags pack flat, cost less and leave hands free.
For commuters with laptops, logo backpacks get used every day, while a second tote sits in a closet.
For food, drinks and picnics, insulated lunch and cooler bags do a job a cotton tote cannot.
For a bottle of wine or a small gift, wine and gift bags look finished at a lower price.

Where custom tote bags are made
We are a distributor, not a print shop. We source the bag from a network of ASI-registered suppliers, prepare your artwork, manage the e-proof and coordinate the decoration and delivery. Production happens at supplier facilities in the U.S. and internationally. If Made in USA is a requirement, say so in the first email, because availability depends on the style and lead times and prices differ from imported bags.
Six ways to lower the cost without a worse bag
Cut a color, not the fabric. A one-color logo on a 10 oz canvas bag looks better than a three-color logo on a 5 oz bag, and it saves a setup.
Print one side. A second location doubles the setup for a side most people never see while carrying the bag.
Match the bag color to the ink. A natural canvas bag with a dark one-color print is the classic for a reason. It is the cheapest premium look on the page.
Price the next quantity tier. On cotton and canvas, the jump from 250 to 500 often costs far less than double. Use the extras at the next event.
Ship to one address. Consolidate and hand out locally when you can. Every extra ship-to is another freight line.
Reorder the same art. Reorders of the same product and logo are often cheaper, because many suppliers waive or reduce setup when the file is still on hand, commonly within 12 months.
What does not lower the cost: switching to a thinner bag after the proof, asking for a rush date you did not need, or splitting one order into three small ones that each pay their own setup.
What to skip
Picking a bag from the photo instead of the fabric weight.
A four-color wrap print on a thin non-woven bag. Loud in the proof, cheap in the hand.
Comparing two quotes on unit price alone. Compare the delivered total.
Ordering exactly to headcount. Decorated runs usually ship within about 95 to 105 percent of the ordered quantity, and you are invoiced for what ships.
Printing "recycled" or "eco" without documentation from the supplier.
What to send with the quote
Send us the use (aisle, retail, gift or program), quantity, what has to fit in the bag, your preferred fabric or a budget per bag, imprint colors and locations, the in-hands date, ship-to ZIP codes and your logo file, vector if you have it. We will come back with options at more than one price point and a delivered total for each. Request a tote bag quote.
